What are the Different Types of Hair Replacement Systems?

Losing hair is a natural part of aging, though this can occur much sooner than many would like. The different types of hair replacement systems are some of the most popular anti-aging treatments available, especially among men. Recent improvements in technology have made not only hair pieces more natural looking, but have also given way to specialized medication and treatments to help regrow hair and surgical treatments to cover up signs of balding.

Hair pieces, commonly referred to as toupees or wigs, are an instantaneous way to cover up signs of hair loss, making them one of the most popular hair replacement systems on the market. There are typically two types of hair pieces, each attachable by tape, clips, or with a semi-permanent glue. Mesh hair pieces are the most natural looking and comfortable to wear, though they are not durable enough for long term use and can be expensive. Polymer hair pieces are durable and typically cost effective, although they can be uncomfortable to wear for long periods.

Researchers are constantly looking for new ways to help people regrow their own hair and have made several advances in this area over the last few decades. Specialty shampoos and medications are rapidly becoming among the most popular hair replacement systems available. For many who are suffering from hair loss, these treatments and medications may help them to naturally regrow their own hair. In some cases, they are also a good preventative measure to take against early hair loss, especially for those who have a family history of same.

While hair pieces can be a hassle and specialty shampoos and medications do not always work, hair transplant surgery has helped many people reverse their hair loss. In a typically procedure, hair is taken from the back of the head and transplanted in single hairs or larger grafts to the areas of the head that are bald or balding. The hair will begin to grow there, and regrow in the areas it was taken from, providing a natural look.

Hair transplanting is one of the most common surgical hair replacement systems. There is, however, another surgical procedure known as scalp reduction. In this procedure, the scalp without hair is removed and the scalp with hair is stretched over the bare area, leaving a full head of hair. This procedure, while not common, is used most often for those who are not good candidates for hair transplant surgery.

Hair replacement systems can be an option for combating hair loss. Eventually nature does take over, however, and there may be little one can do to avoid hair loss or thinning. While researchers are currently looking for ways to get around this, the current hair replacement systems available may be a good place to start for those who are losing their hair.
